The basis for a healthy life for your horse

Wild horses are always on the move to new feeding grounds. The diet of Central European horses includes 150 to 200 plant species. Horses eat leaves, fruits, buds, bark and roots. We can no longer offer our horses this variety and diversity today. The most common diet today, species-poor grass pastures and hay from grass fields, is unnatural and therefore cannot be species-appropriate. This unbalanced diet impoverishes the intestinal flora.

Diversity for the horse's gut

Numerous studies and long-term observations of semi-feral horses, such as the Dülmen horses in Merfelder Bruch or conservation grazing projects, show clearly: horses graze not only on grasses and herbs but also on trees, shrubs, and heathland plants. The horse’s digestive tract is long and designed to extract energy from raw fibre. Feeding with energy-rich grass and grain – especially without real performance demands – leads to imbalance, disrupts the gut environment, and places a burden on the metabolism. This one-sided, high-energy diet disturbs the intestinal balance and reduces bacterial diversity. To restore this balance, horses need species-rich feed blends with diverse nutrients and plant-based bioactives.

Herbs for intestinal balance

A diverse gut microbiome and a rich variety of nutritional components go hand in hand – one depends on the other. This balance ensures that no single plant compound or microbial strain can dominate in a harmful way. In the gut microbiome, food is broken down, and the intestinal bacteria produce essential enzymes, vitamins, and amino acids. Approximately 70% of immune activity takes place in the gut. That’s why feeding herbs is more than just a special dietary approach – it helps maintain or regenerate a healthy gut flora and stimulates the metabolism.

Natural. Species-Appropriate. PerNaturam.

Our formulations are inspired by nature. Our “landscape blends” combine herbs and grasses that naturally grow and are grazed together in the wild. For gentle yet effective support of equine health – natural, harmonious, and holistic. Whether for everyday nutrition, metabolic support, or to strengthen the immune system – PerNaturam offers natural solutions for healthy and resilient horses.

The Foundation for a Healthy Life for Your Horse

Wild horses are constantly on the move in search of new grazing grounds. Their natural diet in Central Europe includes between 150 and 200 plant species. These include leaves, fruits, buds, bark, and roots – not just grasses.

Today, we can no longer offer our horses this level of variety and complexity. The standard diet of species-poor grass meadows and hay from cultivated fields is unnatural – and therefore cannot be species-appropriate. Such a one-dimensional diet leads to impoverishment of the gut flora. Numerous studies and long-term observations of semi-feral horses, such as the Dülmen horses in Merfelder Bruch or conservation grazing projects, show clearly: horses graze not only on grasses and herbs but also on trees, shrubs, and heathland plants.
